Successfully Navigating College Admissions (Highschoolers & Families)

7:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Montclair Library

50 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair, NJ

This is an online presentation; you must sign up here to gain access. From our friends at Stand Out for College: We are offering this Zoom presentation to help families of high school juniors, sophomores, and freshmen better understand the college admissions process and how to successfully navigate today’s changing landscape. The session will cover current admissions trends and strategies, the evolving test optional environment, the importance of researching and visiting colleges to find the right fit, and key timelines and action steps that can make this season productive while easing stress along the way. We will also take a close look at the holistic admissions review process, including what admissions officers value when evaluating applicants and how students can develop a strong personal narrative that reflects their strengths, interests, and experiences. Another focus will be on the role of community service and how meaningful involvement can foster personal growth, strengthen a student’s character, and demonstrate a positive impact on others. Admissions officers consistently place great emphasis on character, and thoughtful service can help students show initiative and a genuine commitment to helping their communities. This program is recommended for parents and their high school teens. It provides a clear and strategic overview of what students should prioritize for a successful college admissions journey and how to approach the process with confidence and less stress. The presentation will be led by Ron Feuchs and Jackie Tepper, partners at Stand Out For College LLC (www.standoutforcollege.com). Sign up for the Monthly Teen Newsletter.

Queer Lit Club

6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Montclair Library

50 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair, NJ

This month we'll be reading "Big Swiss" by Jen Beagin. Greta lives with her friend Sabine in an ancient Dutch farmhouse in Hudson, New York. The house, built in 1737, is unrenovated, uninsulated, and full of bees. Greta spends her days transcribing therapy sessions for a sex coach who calls himself Om. She becomes infatuated with his newest client, a repressed married woman she affectionately refers to as Big Swiss, since she's tall, stoic, and originally from Switzerland. Greta is fascinated by Big Swiss's refreshing attitude toward trauma. They both have dark histories, but Big Swiss chooses to remain unattached to her suffering while Greta continues to be tortured by her past. One day, Greta recognizes Big Swiss's voice at the dog park. In a panic, she introduces herself with a fake name and they quickly become enmeshed. Although Big Swiss is unaware of Greta's true identity, Greta has never been more herself with anyone. Her attraction to Big Swiss overrides her guilt, and she'll do anything to sustain the relationship...

Ireland’s first female president, Mary Robinson, will be a keynote speaker at Kean University’s 18th Annual Human Rights Conference on Friday, March 27. Centered on the theme of Sustainability in Action, the conference will explore the intersection of human rights and sustainability, highlighting how collective action can drive meaningful change. Robinson served as Ireland’s president from 1990-1997 and later as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. A global leader on climate justice, she has dedicated years to addressing the climate crisis as a defining human rights challenge and has long advocated for diverse voices in shaping global climate solutions. Joining Robinson are humanitarian and actress Monique Coleman and climate justice advocate Sabs Katz, whose work spans global policy, youth advocacy and community-based environmental action. Coleman, a United Nations Youth Champion and star of Disney’s High School Musical, has traveled to 24 countries advocating for issues affecting young people worldwide, while Katz is a Brooklyn-based sustainability communications expert and creator of Sustainable Sabs, a platform promoting climate justice through slow fashion, wellness, and more. Several human rights awards will also be presented at the conference, including the Student Human Rights Activist Award. Additionally, attendees are encouraged to visit the Human Rights Institute Gallery exhibition by Jaymes Jorsling, Hub City: An Interdisciplinary Exploration of History, Art, and Identity. Centered on New Brunswick’s overlooked role in slavery and freedom, the exhibition uses visual art, theatre and music to reflect on ancestry, resilience and the power of art in healing, dialogue and remembrance. The conference begins at 9 a.m. at Wilkins Theatre, with overflow seating available at the North Avenue Academic Building (NAAB) on Kean’s Union campus. Now is the Time: Artists Go to Work - Toni Morrison’s Atelier and the Importance of Artistic Convening and Collaboration

4:30 PM - 6:00 PM

Hurley Gallery at Lewis Arts complex on Princeton University campus, 122 Alexander St, Hurley Gallery b at Lewis Arts complex on the Princeton University campus, NJ, 08544, United States

Hurley Gallery at Lewis Arts complex on Princeton University campus, 122 Alexander St, Hurley Gallery b at Lewis Arts complex on the Princeton University campus, NJ, 08544, United States, Princeton, NJ

“This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair.” – Toni Morrison. Princeton Professor, Emeritus, Toni Morrison taught that the measure of a nation is not in its monuments but in the stories it has the courage to face. To reckon with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence is to reckon with freedom declared in words long before it was lived in practice, and to grapple with a history that has constantly faced erasure. A convening of artists, thinkers, and communities will collectively reflect on the unfinished work this anniversary makes so strikingly apparent. The Lewis Center’s Princeton Atelier and The Collaboratorium for Radical Aesthetics joins The Toni Morrison Foundation and the Park Avenue Armory to present a panel discussion reflecting on the power of artistic convening and collaboration as part of the on-going legacy of the Atelier’s founder, Toni Morrison. Moderated by Atelier Director Tina Campt and former Program Director for Arts and Culture at The Mellon Foundation Emil Kang, speakers include curator and choreographer Rashida Bumbray; Grammy Award-winning drummer, composer, producer, and educator Terri Lyne Carrington; founder of Kindred on the Rock, writer, and activist Staceyann Chin; MacArthur Fellow and movement artist Okwui Okpokwasili and her co-founder of Sweat Variant, director, composer and designer Peter Born; and Grammy Award-winning bassist, composer, and educator Esperanza Spalding. Accessibility: The Wallace Theater is an accessible venue. Guests in need of access accommodations are asked to contact the Lewis Center at LewisCenter@princeton.edu at least one week prior to the event date.
