The Westfield Area YMCA is offering an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course to the community ages 15+ who want to gain the appropriate knowledge, skills, and certification to be a lifeguard and professional rescuer. The two-day course is March 30 from 8 a.m.- 6 p.m. and March 31 from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Main Y Facility, 220 Clark Street in Westfield. The comprehensive, blended learning course covers safety skills, accident prevention, scanning, guarding techniques, emergency systems, rescue skills, first aid in aquatic environments, spinal injury management, open water dangers, legal responsibilities, and pool maintenance basics. Trainees are required to pass a physical skills test before attending training course sessions. Registration is available online or at the Main Y Welcome Center. Donate any unwanted, yard sale-quality items, and browse other donated items for free. Visitors are limited to 60 minutes at each Summit Free Market event. No unsorted boxes or bags will be accepted. A Summit resident permit is required to enter the Transfer Station facility and for other resident-only services like parking on certain levels in the Broad Street garage and other resident-only lots. Summit residents can obtain a permit online or in person at the Parking Services Agency at City Hall on 512 Springfield Avenue. Events are held on the second Saturday of each month from 8AM to 3PM, and on the fourth Friday of each month from 12PM to 2PM (third Friday in November, no Friday event in December). No appointments are necessary.
